Item Description
Discover how human beings react to danger–and what makes the difference between life and deathToday, nine out of ten Americans live in places at significant risk of earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, terrorism, or other disasters. Tomorrow, some of us will have to make split-second choices to save ourselves and our families. How will we react? What will it feel like? Will we be heroes or victims? In her quest to answer these questions, award-winning journalist Amanda Ripley traces human responses to some of recent history’s epic disasters, from the explosion of the Mont Blanc munitions ship in 1917–one of the biggest explosions before the invention of the atomic bomb–to the journeys of the 15,000 people who found their way out of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. To understand the science behind the stories, Ripley turns to leading brain scientists, trauma psychologists, and other disaster experts. She even has her own brain examined by military researchers and experiences, through realistic simulations, what it might be like to survive a plane crash into the ocean or to escape a raging fire.Ripley comes back with precious wisdom about the surprising humanity of crowds, the elegance of the brain’s fear circuits, and the stunning inadequacy of many of our evolutionary responses. Most unexpectedly, she discovers the brain’s ability to do much, much better–with just a little help.

This text should be mandatory reading for public safety professionals or those engaged in the planning of safety programs and processes in our places of work, our schools, and any public domain area. These ideas should become a common part of our safety vernacular when planning and conducting such basic exercises as fire drills. I highly recommend this book.

THE UNTHIKABLE ... Practise Makes Perfect !!! ... Be Prepared - and Live !!!
What would you do if all of a sudden, you were faced immediately with the horrifying realization of being in the middle of a life or death situation? ... That's exactly what this book addresses! Read it, and be prepared!
Here's an example from page 50 of the book: "Repeatedly absorbing disaster images on TV can be particularly damaging. After 9/11, studies showed that the more hours of coverage adults and children watched, the more stress they experienced. In general, TV makes us worry about the wrong things. Your brain is better at filtering out media hype when it is reading. Words have less emotional salience than images. So it's much healthier to read the newspaper than watch TV." ... I'm sure all the newspaper, magazine, and book publishers of the world will appreciate that! I for one know that I get tired and dizzy after even just a few hours of reading words on a computer screen - but never from reading the printed word in a book!
This books talks about all the reasons why people do, and do not do, things during a crises situation that could save their lives or the lives of others around them. It covers topics like delaying taking action, taking risks, feeling fear, having resilience, thinking as a group, feeling panic, becoming mentally and / or physically paralyzed, acting heroically, and all the other things that people do or feel when they find themselves in the middle of a disaster.
As my dad used to say, and as is stated in this book with example after example: "Practice makes perfect!" The more we go over something with our minds and bodies working together kinesthetically, the better we get at it. The bottom line is if you practice what you have to do during a disaster BEFORE the disaster occurs, you will be far better prepared to deal with the disaster when it hits. The chances of your survival increase exponentially. ... Good book. ... YOWZA! - George Koumantzelis / The Aeolian Kid

At a recent Disaster Management Conference that brought numerous agencies and representatives together this book was highly recommended reading for anyone who plays a role in Emergency Preparedness or Disaster Management. AS the Emergency Measures Coordinator for a small Manitoba (Canada) town that experiences regular spring flooding along with the occasional summer tornado I eagerly ordered this book from Amazon.com. I must say that was not disappointed! A great book at a great price and excellent service from Amazon. Thanks!
The Unthinkable

The book was extremely well written and kept my attention throughout the entire reading. My only dislike was the writer's constant reference's to evolution and Darwinism as to the reason for a human's response during difficult times.
